Description
Lake Arenal is a vast mirror of nearly 85 square kilometers, ringed by green hills and crowned by the silhouette of the volcano. Beneath its surface lies the old town of Arenal, relocated when the reservoir was created in the 1970s. Today it is the largest lake in Costa Rica and a spectacular setting for feeling the rush of speed with the wind in your face.
The adventure begins on shore with a safety briefing and hands-on training. After a short driving check, you will climb aboard your own Yamaha WaveRunner and follow your certified guide out onto open water. With one guide for every five riders, the experience feels safe, attentive and personal, whether you are a first-timer or have ridden before.
The route winds between small forested islands, slips past the points where rivers flow into the lake and reveals shoreline habitats where herons, kingfishers and sometimes howler monkeys rest. On clear days, the cone of Arenal dominates the horizon and delivers some of the most memorable photographs of your trip.
Midway through, you will pause in a calm, sheltered bay framed by greenery, cut the engine and slip into the water for a refreshing swim in a safe spot. Your guide shares stories about the submerged town, the dam and the people who make their lives along these shores. It is a thrilling and refreshingly different way to experience Arenal, perfect for couples, friends and adventurous families.
