Description
Just minutes from the buzz of Jaco, the pavement gives way to red earth and the air starts to smell of wet leaves. This two-hour ride is designed for travelers who want the thrill of an ATV without committing a whole day: roughly 30 kilometers of trails climbing from the coast to the ridgelines of the Agujitas hills, wrapped in lush secondary rainforest.
The first big reward comes early. After a winding climb, the trail opens onto a natural lookout where the crescent of Jaco Beach, the deep blue Pacific and, on clear days, the outline of the Nicoya Peninsula all line up in front of you. It is the moment to cut the engine, breathe in and take the photo everyone back home will ask about.
From there the route follows the mountaintops, quite literally above the canopy, where scarlet macaws often call overhead and toucans perch on bare branches. We pause at a hilltop ranch with panoramic views for a freshly brewed cup of Costa Rican coffee or a cold drink, while your guide shares stories about the region and rural life high above Garabito.
The descent dives into denser forest, past giant ferns and shallow creek crossings that send mud flying. Before heading back to base, one last stop reveals a small hidden waterfall where you can cool your hands and face. It is a short, punchy adventure with views that make every splash of mud worth it, and an ideal choice when your schedule is tight but your appetite for adventure is not.
