Description
La Leona waterfall does not appear in the usual brochures, and that is exactly what makes it so special. Hidden in the foothills of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano near Liberia, it is reached by a trail that crosses working farms, dry forest and riverbanks, far from the crowds. The hike takes roughly two hours each way and blends pure nature with a real sense of exploration, perfect for active travelers who want to feel the most authentic side of Costa Rica.
Your private guide sets the pace as the path alternates between open pasture and the shade of centuries-old trees. Along the way it is common to spot howler monkeys, iguanas, white-throated magpie-jays and metallic-blue morpho butterflies that seem to float above the water. Then the trail meets the river and the fun begins: wading across knee-deep currents, hopping from boulder to boulder and following the bank as the rock walls slowly close in.
The final stretch is a narrow canyon of volcanic stone, where you swim a short distance in a life jacket through emerald-green water. Around the last bend La Leona finally appears, a cascade plunging into a turquoise pool framed by fern-covered walls. The sound of the water echoes off the stone and the moment feels almost magical.
After plenty of time to swim and take photos, you hike back out to a well-earned traditional Costa Rican lunch. It is a demanding adventure, yet very achievable for anyone who walks regularly, and one of the most genuine experiences you can have in Guanacaste, the kind of day that becomes a favorite travel story.
