Description

Rincón de la Vieja National Park is Guanacaste's great volcanic laboratory, a landscape where the earth breathes, boils and steams beneath a blanket of forest. This private half-day tour reveals it in the most classic and charming way, pairing a relaxed horseback ride, a walk among geothermal wonders and a swim at one of the region's loveliest waterfalls.

The morning begins in the Las Pailas sector, where your bilingual guide leads you along an easy trail that winds between giant trees and open clearings. Suddenly the air turns warm and smells of sulfur: hissing fumaroles appear, gray pools gurgle, and then come the famous pailas, natural cauldrons of boiling mud that pop with small bubbles. It is a living lesson in the energy that drives the heart of the volcano, with monkeys, coatis and butterflies as trail companions.

Then it is time to saddle up. The gentle, trail-wise horses move at an easy pace across pastures and dry forest, with the cone of Rincón de la Vieja outlined on the horizon. No riding experience is needed: the pace is unhurried and you are always accompanied. It is the most authentic sabanero way to see Guanacaste, just as its cowboys have done for generations.

The final destination is La Oropéndola waterfall, which drops roughly 25 meters into a turquoise pool ringed by rock and greenery. The cool water is the perfect reward after the walk and the ride. A traditional lunch completes a full morning, ideal for families with children and for anyone who wants to experience the volcano without a strenuous effort.
