Description
There are corners of the mangrove forest no boat can reach. To discover them you have to glide silently at water level, following channels that narrow into green tunnels beneath the mangrove roots. That is the magic of this kayak adventure in the Damas Island estuary, just fifteen minutes from Quepos and Manuel Antonio.
The experience uses state-of-the-art pedal kayaks, powered by your legs much like a bicycle. That leaves your hands free to take photos, point out a bird or simply enjoy the scenery, and the effort is minimal even for those who have never kayaked before. After a short briefing at the dock, the group sets off with a bilingual naturalist guide who knows every bend of the mangroves.
As you move deeper, the estuary reveals its residents. White-faced capuchins peer out from the branches, colorful crabs scurry over the roots, herons stand motionless awaiting their next catch and, with luck, iguanas, basilisk lizards, raccoons or even a boa resting on a branch make an appearance. Your guide will point out the different mangrove species and explain why this ecosystem is essential to marine life and to protecting Costa Rica's coastline.
During a break on the water you will enjoy fresh fruit, and at the end you return to your hotel with the feeling of having known the mangroves from the inside. It is a calm, intimate and eco-friendly activity, ideal for couples, families and travelers who prefer nature without engines or hurry.
