When Is the Best Time to Visit Costa Rica?

Trip Planning · 15/01/2026

Dry season or green season: we explain how the weather changes by region and which month best fits the trip you have in mind.

It is the question we hear most often, and the short answer is encouraging: Costa Rica can be enjoyed year-round. The full answer, however, depends on what you want to experience, which regions you plan to visit and how you feel about a little tropical rain. In this article we help you choose wisely.

Two seasons, many microclimates

In Costa Rica, people do not talk about spring or fall but about two main seasons. The dry season runs roughly from December to April, and the green season, also called the rainy season, from May to November. Still, the mountainous geography creates microclimates: while Guanacaste can go weeks without rain, the Caribbean coast and the Monteverde cloud forest stay humid for much of the year.

Dry season: December to April

This is high season at its finest. Days are sunny, the Pacific is usually calm and roads are in their best condition.

  • Ideal for travelers seeking reliable sun and beach time, especially in Guanacaste.
  • A better chance of seeing Arenal’s summit and the Poás crater clearly.
  • February through April overlaps with quetzal nesting season in the highlands.
  • This is peak demand: Christmas, New Year and Easter week must be booked far in advance.

The main drawback is cost and occupancy. If you travel during these dates, we recommend securing hotels, private transfers and national park tickets several months ahead.

Green season: May to November

The name says it all: with the rains, the country turns an intense green, waterfalls run full and wildlife is especially active. The typical pattern is a sunny morning followed by afternoon showers, which makes it easy to plan activities without losing the day.

  • More accessible rates and fewer visitors in parks and on beaches.
  • July and August often bring a break in the Pacific rains, known as the veranillo.
  • A great season for surfing, with more consistent Pacific swells.
  • Green sea turtle nesting in Tortuguero, roughly from July to October.
  • Humpback whales in the South Pacific during part of this season.

September and October are generally the rainiest months on the Pacific side. Interestingly, the Caribbean often enjoys its driest weather at the same time, opening the door to alternative itineraries through Puerto Viejo, Cahuita or Tortuguero.

Which month fits your travel style?

  • Honeymoon with sun and sand: January through April in Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio.
  • Family trip with a good balance of weather and price: July or early December.
  • Photography and lush scenery: May through August, when everything turns green.
  • Birdwatching and quetzals: February through May.
  • Surfing: May through November on the Pacific.
  • Avoiding crowds: May, June and November are usually quiet.

How to make the most of any season

Beyond the calendar, the way you get around has a big impact on your experience. In the green season, a private driver knows current road conditions and adjusts schedules so you arrive before the afternoon rain. In high season, a private transfer spares you lines and waits at airports and bus terminals.

  • Plan outdoor activities in the morning.
  • Pack a light rain jacket no matter the month.
  • Keep one flexible day in your itinerary in case the weather changes.
  • Consider private flights for long legs and gain more time to enjoy.
